Stop Misunderstanding! Yellow Diamonds Are Not Always Z Color – The Truth You May Not Know

A D Color diamond, often referred to as a “colorless diamond” or the highest-grade white diamond, is a gemstone many people dream of owning. Some are willing to pay a premium price to possess the purest and whitest diamond available.

If you're new to diamonds, you may not fully understand how diamond color grading works. The diamond color scale ranges from D to Z. A D Color diamond is completely colorless, displaying exceptional clarity and brilliance without any visible yellow tint. This allows it to reflect light beautifully and sparkle intensely. However, its major drawback is its high price.

In contrast, Z Color diamonds typically have a noticeable yellow tint, are less popular, and are generally more affordable. As a result, many people assume that every yellow diamond must be a Z Color diamond. The truth is: that's not always the case.

Understanding the Diamond Color Grading System

The diamond color grading system was established by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and is recognized worldwide. The scale ranges from D to Z, with D representing the highest color grade.

D–F: Colorless

Pure white diamonds with no visible color. These are considered the highest-quality colorless diamonds.

G–J: Near Colorless

Diamonds that appear white to the naked eye, with only slight traces of color detectable under close examination.

K–M: Faint Color

Diamonds that begin to show a subtle yellow tint.

N–R: Very Light Color

Diamonds with a more noticeable yellow or sometimes brownish tint.

S–Z: Light Color

Diamonds that display a clearly visible yellow hue.

Do Yellow Diamonds Have to Be Z Color?

Based on the grading system above, the answer is no.

Not all yellow diamonds are Z Color diamonds. Some yellow diamonds belong to the category known as Fancy Yellow Diamonds, which possess a naturally strong and attractive yellow color. In fact, certain Fancy Yellow diamonds can be worth significantly more than colorless D Color diamonds.

For example, diamonds graded as Fancy Vivid Yellow are extremely rare and highly sought after by collectors. Their intense, vibrant yellow color makes them both valuable and desirable.

Z Color Diamonds

  • Classified within the D–Z color grading scale (part of the GIA 4Cs system)
  • Have a very light yellow tint
  • Still considered part of the white diamond category, but at the lower end of the color scale
  • Generally more affordable
  • Not particularly sought after by collectors

Fancy Yellow Diamonds

  • Classified as Fancy Color Diamonds
  • Display a distinct and attractive yellow color
  • Color intensity can range from Light Yellow, Fancy Yellow, Fancy Intense Yellow, to Fancy Vivid Yellow
  • Some specimens command exceptionally high prices due to their rarity
  • Highly desirable among collectors and jewelry enthusiasts

The easiest way to remember the difference is:

Z Color = Slightly Yellow-Tinted White Diamond

Fancy Yellow = Naturally Beautiful Yellow Diamond

While Z Color diamonds sit at the end of the traditional white diamond color scale, Fancy Yellow diamonds belong to an entirely different category of colored diamonds. Some Fancy Yellow diamonds are incredibly rare, highly collectible, and worth considerably more than colorless diamonds.

Their vibrant beauty makes them a popular choice for rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pendants, brooches, and other luxury jewelry pieces.
