7 Things to Know: How to Take Care of Your Diamond Ring and Keep It Sparkling

How do you care for a diamond ring to keep it dazzling and brilliant like new? The good news is — it’s not difficult! A diamond ring is a valuable and luxurious piece of jewelry. Whether used as an engagement or wedding ring, it represents timeless beauty and elegance.

However, if you wear your diamond ring regularly, it might start to look dull or lose its original sparkle. Oils from your hands can reduce its brilliance. But with the right care, you can keep your diamond shining brightly at all times.

1. Avoid Touching the Diamond Directly

Touching the diamond with your fingers can transfer oils from your skin to the stone, which dulls its shine. To preserve its sparkle, avoid touching the diamond directly.

2. Keep Away from Harsh Chemicals

Chemicals such as bleach, nail polish remover, toilet cleaner, or even perfume can damage or erode the diamond and the setting. Always keep your ring away from these substances.

3. Store Separately from Other Jewelry

When not wearing your diamond ring, store it in a fabric-lined box or soft pouch. Never store it with other jewelry, as diamonds can scratch or be scratched by other gemstones and metals.

4. Remove Before Exercising or Physical Activities

Before engaging in physical activities such as boxing, climbing, biking, or intense workouts, take off your diamond ring. The ring can get hit or damaged, and the setting or gemstone may loosen or break.

5. Remove Before Applying Lotions or Cosmetics

Before applying lotions, sprays, or cosmetics, remove your diamond jewelry. Chemicals in skincare products can dull the shine of the diamond over time.

6. Check the Prongs and Setting Regularly

Prongs (or claws) hold the diamond in place. Make sure they are secure and tight. A loose setting can result in the stone falling out. If you’re unsure how to check, have a jeweler inspect it periodically.

7. Clean Your Diamond Ring Regularly

To clean your diamond ring:

  • Mix a few drops of dish soap with warm water.

  • Soak the ring for about 30 minutes.

  • Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub away any dirt.

  • Rinse with warm water and pat dry with a soft cotton cloth or use a hairdryer on a low setting.

Regular cleaning helps remove dirt and oils, bringing back the ring’s original brilliance.

Can You Wear a Diamond Ring in the Shower?

It’s best to remove your diamond ring before showering, soaking in a hot spring, or swimming. Chlorine and other chemicals in pools or hot tubs can corrode the metal setting and may even weaken the prongs. There's also the risk of the ring slipping off and being lost in the water.
