From now on, Lab-Grown Diamonds should no longer be referred to as “real diamonds.” Did you know that using the term carelessly could potentially violate consumer protection laws due to misleading advertising?
For years, diamonds created by human technology have commonly been known as “synthetic diamonds” or “synthetic gemstones.” Most people in the industry understood this distinction clearly. However, in the retail market, some jewelry stores continued using the term “real diamond” when referring to lab-grown diamonds. Because lab-grown diamonds share very similar chemical properties and hardness with natural diamonds, some sellers simply labeled them as “real diamonds.”
The result? Consumer confusion.
Many buyers believed they were purchasing natural diamonds, only to later discover they had actually bought lab-grown diamonds instead.
This issue has caused confusion in the jewelry market for a long time. Finally, on April 28, the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association officially announced new guidelines regarding the terminology used for diamonds and synthetic gemstones.
The key point is clear:
Businesses must not use wording that could mislead consumers.
This means terms such as “real lab diamond” are no longer acceptable. The term “real diamond” should only refer to natural diamonds formed by nature. Lab-Grown Diamonds must instead be described clearly as “synthetic gemstones” or “synthetic diamonds.” Even phrases like “real diamond (lab)” are considered misleading and should not be used.
Failure to clearly distinguish between natural and synthetic stones could create misunderstanding and may potentially violate consumer protection laws related to deceptive advertising.
Although natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds share similar chemical structures and hardness levels, they are fundamentally different products.
Natural Diamonds
• Form naturally beneath the Earth through geological processes
• Take billions of years to develop
• Rare and highly valuable
• Carry emotional and long-term value
• Suitable for investment, collection, and family heirlooms
Lab-Grown Diamonds (Synthetic Diamonds)
• Created by humans using advanced technology that simulates underground conditions
• Produced within only a few weeks
• Typically cost 50–70% less than natural diamonds
• More accessible and affordable
• Tend to depreciate in value over time

This does not mean synthetic diamonds are “bad.” They simply serve a different purpose and target a different group of buyers. Creating a clear distinction between natural and synthetic diamonds helps reduce confusion, prevents consumers from being misled, and ensures transparency in the jewelry industry.
Some misunderstandings happen because sellers themselves use incorrect terminology. That is unfair to consumers. Therefore, establishing clearer rules and standards is an important and positive step for the industry.
